Whether you’ve been reaping the benefits of receiving chiropractic treatment for a while now, or whether you’re a newbie to the world of chiropractic, there are a few questions that you should always endeavour to ask your chiropractor. We take a look at four of these important questions below.
What Qualifications Do You Have?
It’s essential that you make sure your chiropractor is fully qualified before allowing any treatment to begin. Qualified chiropractors will have studied a six year long course, usually at the University of Johannesburg or the Durban University of Technology. Most qualified chiropractors in South Africa will also be members of CASA. Always ask to see certification if it is not already mounted on the wall of the chiropractor’s consultation room!
How Many Times a Week Must I Come for an Adjustment?
This will depend on how serious the condition or injury for which you’re being treated is. If it’s quite severe, it’s recommended that you see your chiropractor for between 2 – 3 adjustments per week, especially when you first seek treatment. However, if the condition/injury is minor or showing vast improvement, 1 – 2 times per week should suffice.
How Long Does Each Session Last?
This will vary from chiropractor to chiropractor, and it will also depend on the severity of your condition or injury. Most first-time visits will last between 30 – 45 minutes, with follow-up visits usually being much shorter. The majority of follow-up visits shouldn’t last longer than 10 – 20 minutes each.
How Can I Prevent Further Injury?
Along with treating your condition, it’s important for the chiropractor to advise you in terms of how to prevent the condition from worsening (or reoccurring). It’s a good idea to give the chiropractor as much background info as possible in terms of how your injury/condition came about, how long it’s been bothering you and what other treatment options you have tried in the past.
